Airplay Aviation is a flexwing microlight training school based at Sutton Meadows airfield, near Ely in Cambridgeshire. Ideally based in the flatlands of Fenland, Airplay is the closest microlight training school to Cambridge itself, and easily accessible from the A1(M) and A14. Many students also travel to us from as far afield as Norfolk, Suffolk, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and even London.

We offer trial flight air experiences, with gift vouchers available for that unique and unforgettable Christmas or birthday present. For those who wish to learn to fly a microlight aircraft, Airplay can take the budding student pilot from their first lesson all the way through to obtaining their Private Pilots Licence.

Our sister company Airplay Aircraft Ltd sells some of the best value aircraft in the light aviation sector.

Airplay is operated by Chief Flying Instructor David Broom, who is the current World Air Games Microlight Champion. David has been flying since the age of 8, and his microlighting achievements include winning the British Championship two years running, numerous medals at World & European championships and breaking two World Microlight Speed Records. You can be sure that you will be receiving training from one of the very best in the business.

About Sutton

Airplay is privileged to operate from Sutton Meadows airfield, widely regarded as one of the finest microlight sites in the UK. With 3 well-maintained grass runways, Sutton all but eliminates difficult crosswind conditions, allowing us to fly with the wind from all directions. Sutton Meadows is also located adjacent to the 100 foot washes, which provide excellent drainage ensuring that we don’t suffer the waterlogging that can plague other grass airfields. Fenland also enjoys some of the most reliable flying weather in the UK, with its naturally dryer climate.

About David

Airplay’s CFI is David Broom. Having learnt to fly with his father from childhood, David obtained his pilot’s licence aged 17 (the earliest legally allowed in the UK). After completing a degree in Computing, David decided to leave his aspiring electronics career in order to pursue his passion of flying full-time and qualified as a Flying Instructor in early 2003. Since then, David has amassed well over 6000 hours of flying in all sorts of microlight aircraft, light aircraft, hang-gliders, paragliders and sailplanes. David is qualified as both a Ground and Flight Examiner. David has also enjoyed success in microlight competitions, having been selected for the British team in various international events since 2003. These successes include winning the British Championship in 2009 & 2010, and European and World Championship Silver medals in 2004, 2005, 2007 & 2010, with a Gold medal in the 2015 World Air Games. David has also broken two World Microlight Speed records along with former trainee John Lawrance as a passenger. David’s goal is to use these hard-earned skills to ensure his students have the very best in professional microlight training.
